RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT
The following events took place in the University from Monday, 19th February, to Friday 1st March, 2024.
1. We are glad to report the successful hosting of the 34th Convocation Ceremony of the University for the award of certificates of first degrees/prizes and the conferment of post-graduate diplomas, higher degrees and Prizes, a total number of thirteen thousand (13,816) graduate and post-graduate students were conferred with their degrees respectively of which 8,146 we’re First Degrees, 3,665 as Post-Graduate Diplomas, 1,528 as Masters while 477 bagged their Doctorate Degrees. Some major highlights of the Convocation Ceremony includes:
– Media Briefing by the Vice-Chancellor
– Jumat Service
– Convocation Service
– Tree Planting and Command Performance
– Class Day Activities at the College/Faculties and First Class Graduands/Graduands with Distinction from College of Health Sciences and Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences
– Research Fair
– Convocation Lecture/Award of Certificates/First Class Degrees and Prizes and Chancellor’s Dinner
– Award of Post-Graduate Diplomas, Higher Degrees and Prizes
The Ceremony had in attendance the Visitor, His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) represented by Ag. NUC Secretary, Dr. Chris Maiyaki, the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher G. Musa, the Rivers State Governor, H.E. Sir Siminialayi Fubara represented by the Deputy Governor, Prof. Ngozi Odu, members of the National Assembly, Visiting Vice-Chancellors, Registrars, Captains of Industries and Friends of the University amongst others.
2. We received the National Universities Commission Visitation Team on the Federal Government Equipment Maintenance led by Dr. Ayinla to assess our equipment maintenance capacity with the possibility of more interventions.
3. We received with mixed feelings the Management of the Wigwe University as a follow up to our series of meetings on areas of collaboration towards achieving the towering vision of establishing one of Africa’s best private Universities. In honour of late Herbert Wigwe, a minute of silence was observed.
4. We received Dr. Bashir Y. Jamoh, the Director General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) who came for the official hand over of the newly built and furnished building donated to the University by NIMASA. The University is grateful to the Agency for such interventionist project which will in no small measure improve the value chain of education in the University.
5. As a University, we take pride in our institutional and individual strides. The University of Port Harcourt again took the centre stage at the Association of African Universities in Accra, Ghana as we presented the Enterprise Resource Planning Software, a one stop online solution platform for e-administration, e-procurement, e-accounting and e-projects developed and deployed by the ICT Team of the World Bank Centre of Excellence, University of Port Harcourt.
6. The 183rd Inaugural Lecture of the University was delivered by Professor Stanley I. Okoroafor of the Department of History and Diplomatic Studies, Faculty of Humanities. The lecture titled “Nigeria Delta Prehistoric Studies: The Motivational Superb Gains From The Odinani Non-Script Sources” was excellently delivered.
7. As a statutory requirement to acquaint our newly admitted candidates with the basic rules and regulations of the University, we held an orientation exercise for the over 10,000 newly admitted candidates from across the College and faculties. The candidates received pep talks ranging from academic performance and awards, academic policy, sexual harassment policy, security, morals, and health amongst others.
