THIS WEEK IN RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT
The following events took place in the University from Tuesday 17th September – Friday 20th September, 2024
1. We received commendation from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Zone B in appreciation of our continued efforts in improving learning infrastructure and keeping with high academic standards.
2. The Women in Tech Skills Training for Female Entrepreneurs – an initiative of the Renewed Hope agenda pioneered by the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu was held at the University of Port Harcourt. The Representative of the wife of the President, her Excellency, Lady Valerie Fubara was well received by the University Management as we commended the initiative noting the place of tech in national development. The Tech training was in collaboration with Huawei.
3. The 18th Annual Scientific Conference and All Fellows Congress (ASCAF), a convergence of Fellows of the National Post-Graduate Medical College of Nigeria held her annual conference at the Obi Wali Conference Hall. In our goodwill message we relished the remarkable contributions of the Association to the growth of medical practice in Nigeria whilst underscoring the role of the University of Port Harcourt in modelling quality leadership
4. In preparation for the 2024 NUC Accreditation Exercise, members of the University-Wide Local Accreditation Committee (UWLAC) began Mock Accreditation across some departments in the Faculty of Education. The Director, Academic Planning Research and Control Unit, Prof. Eucharia Nwaichi and Director, UWLAC, Prof. Gospel Kpee are coordinating activities for a successful accreditation exercise. We hereby call on the cooperation of all faculties and departments due for accreditation.
5. The Registry serves as the repository of university records and the centrepiece of administrative activities in the University. In our continued bid for relevant on-the-job training, the Association of Nigerian Universities Professional Administrators in collaboration with the ACE-CEFOR organized a two-day training for all administrative officers in the University.
6. We witnessed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the High Council for Evaluation of Research and Higher Education (HCERESS) with the Executive Secretaries of TetFund and NUC.
7. The University Management has scheduled an emergency meeting of Convocation to elect a Convocation representative to the Governing Council
8. The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences organized a ceremony in honour of Professor Oleka Kelechi Udeala, the pioneer Dean of the Faculty. Professor Udeala, the 9th Vice-Chancellor of University of Nigeria Nsukka was instrumental to the establishment of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences such that during his reign as Dean, the slogan with accreditation team was “if Professor Udeala is here, then, Pharmacy is here”. We celebrate his remarkable contributions and commend the initiative of the Dean, Professor Sydney Aprioku in organizing such a ceremony to honour him years after retirement.
9. We played host to the European Union Erasmus officials from the Federal Ministry of Education who came to the University to give opportunities to students that will enable them train internationally and make positive impacts. We appreciate the Federal Government under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR for this development.
10. Once again we celebrate our students who won the Petralon Energy Future Leaders Program (PEFLP) scholarship prize of One Million Naira. We commend the Dean of the faculties of Engineering, and Science for this feat; we are also grateful to our strategic partner for the benevolence.
