Celebrating World Intellectual Property Day: Honoring Innovation, Creativity, and the Power of Music

The University of Port Harcourt joins the global community in celebrating World Intellectual Property (IP) Day today, April 26, 2025 — a day dedicated to recognizing the critical role that intellectual property plays in fostering innovation and creativity around the world.
Established by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2000, World IP Day raises awareness of how patents, copyrights, trademarks, and designs impact daily life, while celebrating the ingenuity of creators and innovators who drive economic and societal development. The date, April 26, was chosen to mark the coming into force of the WIPO Convention in 1970.
Each year, World IP Day highlights a unique theme reflecting the evolving relationship between creativity, innovation, and intellectual property rights. Over the years, themes have ranged from “Creating the Future Today” in 2001, “Green Innovation” in 2009, “Powering Change: Women in Innovation and Creativity” in 2018, to last year’s “IP and the SDGs: Building Our Common Future with Innovation and Creativity.”
This year, World IP Day 2025 focuses on “IP and Music”, celebrating the powerful connection between intellectual property and the global music industry.

In his special message to mark the occasion, WIPO Director General, Mr. Daren Tang, reflected on the timeless influence of music, sharing his personal connection to Duke Ellington’s “Sophisticated Lady.” He emphasized that music, much like innovation, accompanies us through life’s joys and challenges.
“We wanted this year’s theme to be something that everyone can relate to — so we chose IP and music,” he said. “Whether you are a musician, a music lover, an innovator, or a creator, intellectual property is key to your journey. It helps bring ideas, creative expressions, and art to the world.”
Mr. Tang called on all stakeholders to not only celebrate on April 26 but to continue supporting creators, musicians, and artists throughout the year by recognizing and protecting the role of IP in shaping a vibrant, creative world.
As the world tunes into this year’s celebration, the University of Port Harcourt reaffirms its commitment to nurturing innovation, protecting intellectual property, and inspiring the next generation of creators and innovators.

Happy World Intellectual Property Day!
